Long range IR LWIR (uncooled) and MWIR (cooled) cameras each have their advantages and disadvantages and which camera you should choose depends on the demands of your specific application. Mid-wave infrared cameras excel at long-range surveillance applications. The use of MWIR cameras has revolutionized airport perimeter security, vessel traffic monitoring, and critical infrastructure protection.

The M9 IR pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera Is the Pinnacle of Super Ultra Heavy Duty, HD Image Stabilized Extreme Long Range Cooled MWIR Thermal Imaging FLIR EOIR Camera Systems. The system has incredible detection ranges up to 60 Kilometers and over 40,000 hours of maintenance free service.

Long range MWIR cameras are also less susceptible to atmospheric conditions. To be detected by passive infrared cameras, infrared radiation must travel through the atmosphere to the detector. The range of LWIR cameras is often limited by absorption, scattering, and refraction of LWIR radiation by water vapor and CO2 in the atmosphere. Because MWIR radiation travels through the atmosphere, it is less affected by absorption and scattering than LWIR.

As a result, long range flir MWIR cameras provide the longest detection ranges, seeing about 2.5 times farther than LWIR cameras. Consequently, MWIR cameras can detect humans, vehicles, and objects even if they are many miles away.

While thermal long range LWIR cameras can be affected by weather and environmental factors, MWIR cameras can operate in a range of climates, including those with high humidity, making them particularly well-suited to marine and coastal environments. Additionally, because they are typically smaller and lighter than LWIR cameras with similar optics, MWIR cameras are the obvious choice in applications with size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements, such as airborne operations.

Long range HD Mid-wave (mwir) thermal cameras provide superior sensitivity and contrast with low sensor noise, resulting in high-quality images. Moreover, MWIR cameras provide exceptional image clarity since thermal contrast is often greater in the MWIR band than in the LWIR band. Finally, the noise equivalent delta temperature (NEDT) for an MWIR camera with long-range optics is typically 30-50 % better than that for an LWIR camera, resulting in sharper images.

For tracking fast moving targets or targets with a wide temperature ranges, very long range MWIR deliver wide dynamic range with short integration times to track and visualize the target more clearly than LWIR. MWIR cameras provide superior sensitivity and flexibility, making them ideal for use both in the field and in the laboratory.

Long range Cooled midwave (MWIR) thermal infrared imaging cameras are traditionally made out of Indium Antimonide (InSb) but recently Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) or HOT MCT detectors are available as well. InSb and MCT are very similar; both require an integrated cryocooler, hence the name cooled camera, and come in 640×480 and higher 1280×1040 HD resolution variants. InSb detectors typically run at -40°C whereas MCT are around -20°C. Since thermal cameras work by using heat waves cooling the core exponentially increases the sensitivity increasing both range and performance. Cooled thermal infrared cameras are extremely sensitive to minute temperature differences allowing even a fraction of a degree temperature difference between a target and the background clearly visible. Cooled Mwir and LWIR flir cameras work on mid-wave infrared or MWIR and typically use wavelengths of 3-5μm (3,000nm–5,000nm). The combination of a cooled image core and the ability to work on the MWIR mid ave or medium wave spectrum results in ultra-long range detection capabilities up to 25 miles, even if there is only a few degrees temperature variance between the target and the background. While long rangescooled cameras are a significant investment. and are considerably more expensive then uncooled, their superior range and performance allows them to replace a number of uncooled cameras making them a viable and cost effective solution for applications such as homeland security and coastal surveillance.
Both cooled and uncooled thermal imaging Ir cameras have their advantages in the world of security/defense imaging.

Long range PTZ thermal imaging FLIR camera
M9 Ultra Long Range Cooled PTZ Thermal Camera

Uncooled LWIR long range thermal cameras are extreme detection range infrared cameras that do not require cryogenic cooling. A common detector design is based on the micro bolometer, or amorphous silicon, a tiny Vanadium Oxide (VOx) resistor with a large temperature coefficient on a silicon element with large surface area, low heat capacity and good thermal isolation. Changes in scene temperature cause changes in the bolometer temperature which are converted to electrical signals and processed into an image. Uncooled sensors are designed to work in the Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) band from 7 to 14 microns (7,000nm–14,000nm) in wavelength where terrestrial temperature targets emit most of their infrared energy. Uncooled cameras provide can provide 10+ kilometer of detection and have no maintenance costs making them account for over 80% of all thermal cameras.

Our Long range flir thermal PTZ pan tilt zoom cameras can be custom configured to your needs, we have multiple color and monochrome palettes as well as standard included features such as ranging, heading symbology, wipers, multiple image enhancement functions and much more.

Spi’s long distance/extreme far range thermal Ir cameras integrate specialty image enhancement algorithms that assist in bringing out the detail in cluttered and thermally balanced scenes. They aid in detection and identification of targets of interest at short/medium and long ranges.
